Ask ten people in a jewellery store which gold is "best" and you'll probably get ten confident answers. Most of them will say 22 karat, because that's what their mother bought and her mother before her. It's a fair answer. It just isn't the only good one anymore.
With gold prices where they are, a lot of buyers are quietly rethinking the karat they choose. And once you understand what the number means, the choice gets a lot less mysterious.
What "Karat" Really Tells You
Karat is simply how much of the metal is pure gold. Pure gold is 24 karat, and it's far too soft to make into jewellery that survives daily life. So jewellers mix in other metals, usually copper, silver or zinc, to make it stronger.
Roughly speaking, 22KT is about 91.6 percent gold, 18KT is 75 percent, and 9KT is 37.5 percent. The rest is the mix of other metals. That's why you'll see marks like 916, 750 and 375 stamped on hallmarked pieces. Those numbers are just the purity written out in parts per thousand.
22KT: The Traditional Choice
This is the gold most Indian families think of first, and there's a good reason. It has the highest gold content of the three, it carries that deep warm yellow colour, and it's what most people expect for weddings, gifting and long-term value.
The trade-off is softness. A 22KT bangle can pick up dents and scratches faster than you'd like, and intricate stone settings are harder to hold securely. So it suits heavy, plain or temple-style pieces beautifully, and it's a little less forgiving on delicate, stone-studded designs worn every day.
18KT: The Everyday All-Rounder
Once you add more alloy, gold gets tougher. That's why most diamond jewellery is made in 18KT. It holds stones firmly, resists scratches better, and can be shaped into finer, more detailed designs.
It also takes colour differently. Rose gold and white gold are typically made at 18KT, which is why the modern ring and pendant styles you see today lean this way. If you wear a piece every day, or you're buying something with diamonds, 18KT is very often the sensible pick. Much of our modern ring, mangalsutra and necklace range is crafted in 18KT for exactly this reason.
9KT: The Budget-Smart Newcomer
This one surprises people. 9KT has less gold in it, so it costs noticeably less per gram, and it's the hardest of the three, which makes it very durable for things like slim rings, small pendants and daily-wear pieces.
It's hallmarked in India just like the others, so you're not buying something unregulated. The honest catch is that the colour is a little paler than 22KT, and the gold content is lower, so it's better thought of as fashion and everyday jewellery than as a store of value. If you want something you can wear without worrying, and you're not buying it as an investment, it's a genuinely good option.
A Simple Way to Choose
Think about how the piece will live, not just what it costs.
For a wedding set, a coin, or something meant to be passed down, 22KT makes the most sense. For a diamond ring, a mangalsutra you wear daily, or a modern pendant, 18KT usually wins. For light everyday pieces, gifts on a tighter budget, or a first piece of gold jewellery for a younger person, 9KT is worth a serious look.
Plenty of people own all three. They just use each one for what it does best.
Whatever You Pick, Check the Hallmark
Karat is only meaningful if it's true. Look for the BIS hallmark, the purity number, and the HUID on the piece itself, and verify it through the BIS CARE app before you pay. A 750 stamp on a piece that's actually lower karat is the kind of mistake the hallmark system exists to catch.
See the Difference in Person
Numbers only go so far, and the difference between karats is easier to feel than to read about. You can browse our 9 karat gold collection online, and compare it with our 18KT designs in person at our store, where we're happy to show you the same design in different karats side by side.
The Short Version
22KT is the traditional, high-purity choice, softer and best for heavy plain pieces. 18KT is stronger and better for diamonds and daily wear. 9KT is the affordable, hard-wearing option for everyday fashion. Pick by how you'll wear it, and always confirm the hallmark before you pay.
